For your A1 practical test, you will need to be accompanied by an instructor who is certified in motorcycles. The test will take around 20 minutes, and will comprise modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is conducted at the training center and will focus on off road manoeuvres such as controlled stop, a slalom or an eight figure. The remainder of your test will be on the road, and will focus on how well you can manage a motorbike when it is moving at high speeds.
Module 2 will concentrate on riding a motorbike in traffic and navigating intersections. You will be tested on how well you can follow road signs and comprehend and follow the rules of the road. You will also have to show your ability to ride at low speeds and do slow control exercises like turning left, going up and down hills, and a U-turn.
Once you have successfully completed your A1 licence, you'll be capable of upgrading to the A2 license by passing your CBT, Theory and Practical Tests. You can now ride any A2 category motorcycle and also carry a passenger.
A2 Licence

Then, you'll be taking the on-road portion of the test, where you will be expected to demonstrate hazard avoidance exercises and road positioning. You must also perform lifesaver checks, and maintain two seconds of distance from the vehicle ahead of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make up to a total of 10 violations. This includes not using your mirrors or failing to maintain a safe distance.
Once you pass both modules of your A2 motorcycle test, you'll be able to ride any motorcycle that falls into the A2 category. This includes the renowned Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. These bikes aren't particularly powerful but they are more than capable to manage the speed limits and provide a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence is a natural step up from the CBT and lets riders advance to larger bikes that have more power. The A2 Licence also comes with extra benefits that you won't get with the CBT. For example you can use motorways and transport passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence through additional training and passing the relevant practical exams. The A2 license is valid for two years, and can be upgraded to a full, unlimited A licence after two years.
The first step to getting your A2 license is to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed the requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 practical exam involves demonstrating your riding skills on a closed-circuit, while the module two test involves riding on an open road.
During the A2 practical test, you will need to be able to demonstrate good observation skills and anticipate dangers on the road. You must also be able to apply the correct road positioning and execute controlled manoeuvres. For instance, you should be able to make U-turns and perform an eight-point figure. You should be able to manage the bike in slow-speed situations like turning at junctions and responding to traffic signals.
After having passed your A2 test you can begin working towards obtaining the full A license. This can be done by either taking the direct entry test or following the progressive access route. To be able to take direct entry you must pass the theory test and complete the mod 1 and module 2 practical tests on a bike that has at 54bhp or more.
The A1 and A2 licenses are different than the other UK motorbike licenses, as they are governed by power-to-weight ratios rather than engine cc. Even bikes with 600cc capacity can be A2 certified if they're equipped with restrictor kits. However it is not the case that all bikes that claim to be A2 certified are actually compliant, so it's best to do some research before you purchase one.
A4 Licence
The A4 Licence enables motorists to drive vehicles with more than three wheels. This licence includes trucks, buses and coaches. It also covers vehicles carrying dangerous goods.
